A surprise to many, walk-in clinic inside drugstore looks to fill a need

Retired Mentor police officer Noah Thomas has a new hero. It’s nurse practitioner Melissa Telenko. ¶ “If not for her, I might not be here now,” said Thomas, 62. ¶ His blood pressure was dangerously high when Telenko tested it as part of her routine in seeing a patient at the Take Care Clinic in Mentor. So she called a Concord Township doctor who agreed to see Thomas immediately and began treating him. ¶ Telenko is one of three nurse practitioners at the Take Care Clinic inside Walgreens, 9400 Mentor Ave. The clinics are a wholly owned subsidiary of the drug store chain. "I worked for Mentor Police Department for 20 years and have lived around here even longer but never knew that clinic existed," said Thomas, who lives in Concord....

New walk-in clinic opens

Positioned just north of Shands AGH, the new Solantic urgent-care center will be open for extended hours and weekends and staffed by board-certified physicians, a company spokeswoman explained Tuesday....

Retail health clinics are adding treatments for chronic diseases such as asthma to their repertoire, hoping to find steadier revenue, but putting the clinics into greater competition with doctors' groups and hospitals....such moves are raising the ire of physicians' groups that see the in-store clinics as inappropriate venues for treating complex illnesses. In May, the Massachusetts Medical Society urged its members to press insurance companies on co-payments to eliminate any financial incentive to use retail clinics....
