After two years of explosive growth in retail health clinics, a few things appear to be changing. The rate of new openings has slowed, some clinics have closed and additional players are entering the scene. “The concept is very viable,” said Donna Haugland, RN, CNP, director of practitioner services at MinuteClinic of Minneapolis. “It is a new industry, still defining itself.”...A RAND Health report released in September indicates that in 2007 only 15.9 percent of patients at retail clinics paid out-of-pocket for the care, and costs for services varied between $40 and $70. Some insurers like the retail concept so well, they have waived co-pays, allowing beneficiaries to essentially receive free care at a retail clinic--the reason being that care is cheaper at a retail clinic than in an emergency department. ....
